How we ranked these.

Aggregation, sentiment, threshold

Makeup ranks differently from skincare because the variables are different. Skincare reviewers care about long-term outcomes — does it clear acne, does it improve barrier function. Makeup reviewers care about immediate sensory and visual outcomes — does the foundation match, does the mascara hold a curl, does the lip product transfer. Our methodology accommodates both.

For every makeup product, we counted opinions where the redditor described their actual experience using it — finish, longevity, shade match, formula behavior in their specific conditions. Generic recommendations without context were excluded. We filtered out brand-affiliated swatch threads, influencer haul recap posts, and any thread flagged as a giveaway entry. The remaining opinions came from r/MakeupAddiction, r/MakeupRehab, r/30PlusSkinCare, r/AsianBeauty, and r/RedditLaqueristas where applicable.

Skin tone, undertone, and skin type all affect makeup outcomes more than they affect skincare. We do not segment by these in the rankings because mention volume does not yet support category-by-undertone splits — the data set will need 3–4× more product mentions to produce statistically meaningful tone-segmented lists. For now, treat the percentages as overall consensus and read individual product pages for tone-specific context redditors leave in their reviews.

Reddit consensus by sub-category.

What's actually being recommended, broken down

Foundation

Estée Lauder Double Wear leads foundation mentions at 48 unique users, 52 percent positive — the split sentiment reflects Double Wear's signature trait: it works exceptionally well for oily skin and redditors who want all-day wear, and it works poorly for anyone with dry or combination skin. L'Oréal True Match is the budget consensus pick (42 users, 60 percent). Higher-end picks like NARS Sheer Glow and Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter rank in the 'other' subcategory. The pattern is that foundation performance varies more by skin type than by price tier — match formula to your skin's behavior first.

Concealer

Tarte Shape Tape and Maybelline Instant Age Rewind dominate concealer mentions. Tarte wins on full-coverage for blemishes (54 percent positive at 22 users), Maybelline wins on under-eye brightening (57 percent at 7 users — small sample but consistent). NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer sits in the broader category and is the most-recommended mid-price option for general use. Reddit's takeaway is that no single concealer wins across all use-cases — buy two if budget allows.

Mascara

Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High and Essence Lash Princess are the two highest-rated mascaras in our index — 73 percent and 89 percent positive respectively. Both are drugstore. Reddit consensus on mascara is the clearest in the entire makeup category: drugstore wins on price-per-result and luxury offers no meaningful advantage. The exception is sensitive eyes, where formula matters more than price and clean beauty options like Ilia Limitless become relevant.

Cushion, lip, blush, and complexion

The makeup category's 'other' bucket carries the heaviest mention volume — 12 of our 22 makeup products fall here. Tirtir Red Cushion leads cushion mentions (63 users), and the cushion category is heavily Asian by formulation, with TIRTIR, Clio, and HERA leading. Lip products lean toward Glossier, Charlotte Tilbury, and Fenty across redditors with fuller mention threads. Blush and bronzer mentions cluster around drugstore (Milani, e.l.f.) and Charlotte Tilbury at the high end — premium pigments are where most redditors say high-end makeup actually outperforms drugstore.

Where to start.

Reddit's consensus starter framework for this category

Building a starter makeup kit on Reddit is less about chasing trends and more about identifying the three or four products that match your skin and the look you actually wear day-to-day. r/MakeupAddiction's consistent advice is to invest in foundation match, mascara that works with your lash type, and one complexion product (concealer or cushion) that handles your priority concern — under-eye circles, redness, or blemishes — and to skip the rest of the kit until you've used those daily for at least a month.

For foundation, the starter rule on r/MakeupAddiction is to test in actual daylight on your jawline, not your wrist or hand. Findation.com cross-references shades across major brands once you know your match in one. Drugstore picks for beginners: Maybelline Fit Me, L'Oréal True Match, e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter. Higher-end picks if budget allows: NARS Sheer Glow for radiance, Estée Lauder Double Wear for full coverage and oily skin, Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter for a glow finish.

Mascara starts with whether your lashes are short, sparse, or straight. Lash Sensational Sky High and Essence Lash Princess deliver the most consensus across Reddit for length and curl-hold. For volume, L'Oréal Voluminous Original is the workhorse pick. For sensitive eyes or contact-lens wearers, clean-beauty options like Ilia Limitless Lash and Tower 28 MakeWaves rank well despite their higher price.

Concealer is the third starter pick. Match it slightly lighter than foundation for under-eye work, exact shade match for blemish coverage. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is the consensus crossover pick that handles both. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind is the budget alternative for under-eye brightening. Tarte Shape Tape is the fuller-coverage pick for active blemishes. Reddit's consensus is to buy two concealers if budget allows — one for under-eyes and one for spot coverage — rather than trying to make one product do both jobs.

What redditors are not recommending.

Categories and brands the community pushes back on

Reddit's r/MakeupAddiction and r/MakeupRehab share predictable warnings about product categories that underdeliver. Lip plumpers across all brands draw repeated negative mentions for irritation, temporary results, and dependence on capsaicin or menthol that damages the lip barrier with prolonged use. Drugstore foundations with limited shade ranges (Maybelline Fit Me has improved, but older formulas like Loreal Infallible Pro-Matte have undertone mismatch problems for many skin tones) get consistent complaints from redditors of color.

Cult-favorite Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk lipstick line has lost share on Reddit threads — the consensus is that the Pillow Talk shade range works for a narrow undertone window and the price doesn't match. Glossier's full lineup gets recurring critique for formulas that have not evolved with the rest of the makeup market — the brand built its identity on minimalism and that has aged poorly compared to performance-first alternatives.

The most consistent warning across Reddit is to ignore foundation longevity claims that lack supporting user evidence. Brands marketing 24-hour wear typically deliver 6–10 hours of usable wear, and 'transfer-proof' claims fail in real-world conditions like masks, phones, and contact with collars. Redditors recommend buying samples or splitting product with a friend before committing to a full-size purchase, especially in the $40+ luxury foundation tier.

Frequently asked questions.

Reddit's most-asked questions in this category
What's the best foundation according to Reddit?+

Consistently top-cited foundations across r/MakeupAddiction and r/MakeupRehab include NARS Sheer Glow, Estée Lauder Double Wear, Make Up For Ever HD Skin, and L'Oréal True Match. The exact winner depends on coverage preference (sheer vs full), finish (dewy vs matte), and undertone match. Mention volume favors mid-tier drugstore options because more redditors actually buy them.

What's the best mascara on Reddit?+

L'Oréal Voluminous, Maybelline Lash Sensational, and Essence Lash Princess get the highest positive sentiment by mention volume across r/MakeupAddiction. They beat luxury options on price-per-result. Higher-end picks include Lancôme Hypnôse and Better Than Sex from Too Faced, but redditors consistently note that drugstore mascaras outperform their reputation.

What's the most-recommended concealer on Reddit?+

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, Maybelline Instant Age Rewind, and Tarte Shape Tape are the three concealers with the highest positive sentiment in our index. NARS leads on pigment and undertone matching, Maybelline on price and brightening for under-eyes, and Tarte on full-coverage for blemishes and discoloration.

Is luxury makeup worth it according to Reddit?+

Reddit is mixed. Luxury wins on a few specific items where formula matters — luxury foundation, luxury concealer, certain lip products. Drugstore wins on mascara, blush, eyeshadow palettes, and brushes. The repeated advice on r/MakeupAddiction is to splurge only where finish or longevity is non-negotiable, and save on everything else.

What makeup brands do redditors actually buy?+

Mention volume on r/MakeupAddiction shows the workhorse brands are Maybelline, L'Oréal, NYX, Essence, e.l.f., NARS, MAC, Charlotte Tilbury, and Fenty Beauty. Maybelline and L'Oréal dominate drugstore. NARS and Charlotte Tilbury dominate mid-luxury. Fenty leads on inclusive shade ranges. Hourglass and Pat McGrath get cult-favorite mentions but with smaller buyer pools.

What's the best drugstore makeup according to Reddit?+

Top-cited drugstore picks across r/MakeupAddiction are L'Oréal Voluminous mascara, Maybelline Fit Me foundation, e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter, NYX Butter Gloss, Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer, and Essence Lash Princess mascara. The pattern is that drugstore wins on textures and pigment-to-price ratio. It loses on long-wear formulas and luxe finishes — so high-end is worth it for foundation and concealer if budget allows.

How do I find my foundation shade on Reddit?+

The most-recommended workflow on r/MakeupAddiction is Findation.com to translate one foundation match to a shade in another brand, plus jaw-line testing in actual daylight. Avoid wrist testing — your wrist undertone differs from your face. For a foundation match online, post a clear no-filter photo with neutral lighting in r/MakeupAddiction's daily threads and people will pinpoint your undertone.

Are clean beauty makeup brands worth it?+

Reddit is skeptical. The consensus on r/MakeupAddiction and r/MakeupRehab is that 'clean beauty' is a marketing term with no regulated definition, and many clean beauty makeup brands underperform mainstream alternatives on pigment, longevity, and shade range. Brands like Ilia and Kosas have legitimate followings, but most clean beauty makeup costs more for less performance than equivalent mainstream products.
